Airplane food on ANA
Trip date: October 23, 2016
On our way to Japan, we ate some Washoku-style food on the flight to Narita. Washoku is a traditional style of food presentation with multiple courses based on largely fish protein and vegetables, always including rice and soup.
The most interesting thing in our starter course was salmon head cartilage - it's the little bowl in the center with the red pepper star. Overall this course was OK - the top left was my favorite (tuna & squid).
This was followed by a main dish entree with soup and rice. The sable fish was really flavorful and tender, though there were a lot of bones.
Then there is also an option to order a la carte for a few items. I got the signature ANA chicken curry while Lishan got the Ippudo ramen (oops, only she has the picture). I've had the curry before and thought it was good, and it did not disappoint this time either!
Finally before landing, there was one more smaller Washoku meal. This one had simmered mackerel which isn't Lishan's favorite, sad! I thought it was OK - the meal was pretty light, mackarel had no bones (huzzah), nothing too special though.
Unrelated to food, on the 12ish hour flight, we watched the following movies:
- Independence Day: Resurgence - pretty terrible and didn't help the version we watched had a lot of the dogfight scenes censored.
- Star Trek Beyond: good thing didn't have to pay to see it.
- Now You See Me 2: entertaining if you liked the first one.
- I also caught Final Fantasy XV Kingsglaive, which was... Interesting. The animation actually left a bunch to be desired imho, but the setup was fun.
- We also watched some silly Asian cinema movies because ANA's Hollywood selection was pretty limited. Cathay Pacific still has the most selection that we've seen so far.
We are wrapping up day 1 in Tokyo, so more posts will come soon!
